{"id":1517,"date":"2008-08-14T17:43:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-14T17:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janaremy.com\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2008-08-14T17:43:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-14T17:43:00","slug":"love-makes-a-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.janaremy.com\/pilgrimsteps\/2008\/08\/14\/love-makes-a-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Love Makes a Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<style type=\"text\/css\">.flickr-photo { border: solid 2px #000000; }.flickr-yourcomment { }.flickr-frame { text-align: left; padding: 3px; }.flickr-caption { font-size: 0.8em; margin-top: 0px; }<\/style>\n<div class=\"flickr-frame\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/waitingline\/2758415460\/\" title=\"photo sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3257\/2758415460_cddbe31eb2.jpg\" class=\"flickr-photo\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/> <span class=\"flickr-caption\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/waitingline\/2758415460\/\">Love Makes a Family<\/a>, originally uploaded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/people\/waitingline\/\">waiting line<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"flickr-yourcomment\"> I believe in <a href=\"http:\/\/pilgrimgirl.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/amendment.html\">equal marriage rights<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>What makes me incredibly sad about the resources that are being mobilized in California to fight and defend Prop 8 is that those same resources could be far better used for addressing the very <i>real<\/i> social problems that tear apart families.<\/p>\n<p>Those thousands of dollars that the LDS church <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nine-moons.com\/2008\/08\/07\/the-my-girl-bill\/\">is soliciting from its wealthier members<\/a>, what if they were devoted to fighting poverty (particularly hunger and lack of healthcare), <a href=\"http:\/\/the-exponent.com\/2008\/08\/09\/guest-post-on-christianity-and-proposition-8\/\">war<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindonfire.com\/2008\/06\/28\/spark-lds-church-warns\/\">racism<\/a>, and environmental crises.  Just imagine <a href=\"http:\/\/pilgrimgirl.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/where-did-all-money-go.html\">the difference that just a few thousand dollars<\/a> could make.<\/p>\n<p>This issue makes me so weary.  Why do we keep fighting to remove rights from people instead of working together to make this world a more loving place?  I know I&#8217;m hippie-dippy-idealistic.  But I just don&#8217;t get it.  How does <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindonfire.com\/2008\/08\/13\/in-which-i-am-asked-by-lds-church-representatives-to-support-prop-8-canvassing-efforts\/\">fighting gay marriage <\/a>&#8220;protect families&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><br \/>UPDATE: One reason I feel so strongly about this issue is that it is so similar to anti-miscegenation laws that were in place not so long ago.  Given that my spouse and children are products of mixed-race marriages (duly noting the slipperiness of racial categorizations even as I use them so glibly here), I&#8217;m grateful to those who fought to change these laws and make inter-racial marriage both legally and socially acceptable.
