My prosthetist Tom was himself an above-knee amputee. <\/span>I met him on Christmas Eve when my knee broke. <\/span>I was at home with my two children\u2014the youngest just one-month old. <\/span>I was despondent. <\/span>How could I care for two children with a broken knee and I wouldn\u2019t be able to get it fixed until after the holiday? <\/span>I began calling all the prosthetists in the Yellow Pages. <\/span>Tom answered his phone and agreed to make a housecall. <\/span>He came by and quickly ascertained the problem. <\/span>He made a quick run back to his office for parts and made the repair. <\/span>When I asked him how much money I owed him, he said \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and winked at my children as he headed out the door.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Years later when I wanted a leg that I could wear kayaking and to the beach, Tom made me a pylon with a plunger-like rubber stopper on the bottom instead of a foot. <\/span>I loved wearing that leg. <\/span>It had no knee, no technology. <\/span>It cost only a few dollars. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Garry, my current prosthetist, was assigned to me by my HMO. <\/span>He works for a growing chain of prosthetic offices. <\/span>My latest leg cost $64,000\u2014which the HMO paid for. <\/span>It has a computerized knee joint and it has a battery that needs to be \u2018charged\u2019 every 24 hours. <\/span>It imitates an almost-natural knee motion. <\/span>I can walk down hills and stairs and on even surfaces without fear of falling. <\/span>It has a lifelike cosmetic cover. <\/span>I can bounce on my toe three times to change the \u2018mode\u2019 of the knee for sports activity. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

But it can\u2019t get wet. <\/span>And it makes me nervous to go barefoot because the points for the electrical charger are on the side of my ankle. <\/span>I haven\u2019t gone to the beach in two years.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
